
’Twas A, B, C, for Ladybirds,
as spotted shelf, first children’s words;
but x and y, algebra nerds,
not strictly cross, more butterfly )(
as were drawn axes, discrete sets.
Not cutting edge, lumberjack threats -
just graphic lessons, more regrets.
New disciplines, each with own code,
fresh glyphs or customs to erode
our confidence in walking road,
both low or high, the same apply.
And as for teaching spelling bee,
to ‘talk not write’ was primary -
in prep for lessons - that the key.
Southall guest of boys in class,
my first encounter, whisky glass,
naivety was crass, alas,

the third was spilled, half by intent;
diplomacy was all but spent.

so, every subject, should you ask -
of me, left sixth-form, wearing mask;
if questioned, though a lie, deny.

but I learnt Hindu, Muslim care.
