Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are grey
the day your child has courage, to tell you that they’re gay
it’s all picture and no sound for at least the next few weeks
better to say nothing than say something you’ll regret
You said you were the modern man, open minded to the core
it’s a different conversation, when it comes knocking on your door
they might be out, but now you’re in, and all you do is hide
from telling friends and family, fear of denting your own pride
Do you love them any less? Maybe just a little?
blood is blood after all, the right to be prejudicial
maybe I’m the homophobe, or maybe the imposter?
or a dad who thinks he knows what’s best, for his own one and only youngster
Was it something as a parent, that I did or didn’t say
to make my child so different, to grow up in this way?
you realise it’s not your fault and out of your control
you’ve done your best now live with it, concentrate on growing old
Selfishness clouds my judgement and leaves me feeling sad
cursed by a lifestyle that robs me of status of Grandpa
straight, gay, non-binary, we have a right to yearn
to be loved by those who love us and give love in return
Happiness comes in many shapes, and all sorts of guises
sometimes in the strangest things, people, and surprises
somewhere over the rainbow, I hope that skies are blue
where everyone’s accepted and you can live your life as you
Challenging subject and beautifully written.
A fine, brave and honest poem.
Bravo! Your words have a gentle mentoring, challenging manner which is perfect, 'the echo of a whisper travels further than that of a shout'
Good on you...
Peace and Love to you William
