5 why always 5

Updated: Jun 9, 2025

I've become somewhat aggrieved,

if it's to be believed,

That my skill in writing rhyme,

In this form has reached it's prime

it's left me feeling peeved.

I'm still write the odd ditty'

It's not always very pretty.

If you read this very piece,

It hardly presents a feast

And that,I think's a pity.

I need to change my style,

and that might take a while.

My mind's an empty shell,

Looking down an empty well.

Just crumpled paper in a pile.

You say, patience is a virtue.

I know at least that much is true,

And hope the passion will return

and once again feel the yearn

To write something other than a simple 5 line stanza

Rules, rules, rules!

Every poet has a different voice.

If your rhyme scheme doesn't fit one, call it the "Trayling"

Don’t despair Keith- inspiration and apathy I find come in equal waves. Maybe write on a subject or feeling familiar to you in whatever style comes to you at the time.

I know this feeling well but you are far from an empty shell Keith, all poetry takes skill and artistry and none more so than this.

1 It doesn't matter. Five line stanzas are great (Especially with your light hearted touch and a trick ending)

2 Or you can just ignore form, rhyme, and other "rules" and write from the heart

3 Or if you prefer rules maybe set yourself a challenge to write a sonnet, or a villanelle and follow their rules
