The Batter

Writer's picture: Jim ReadJim Read

Updated: Jan 31

He starts slowly

Leaving anything outside off-stump

Cautious

Forty minutes before his first  boundary

A sweet cover drive precisely placed

Confident

Back in his shell either side of lunch

Then a flurry of fours

Before edging to second slip

A sharp chance put down

Fortunate

The  next ball lands in the members area

Spilled beer and hilarity

Only the rain can stop him now

He will resume on 89

Determined to build a  big innings.

Brilliant response to the challenge. Beginnings indeed.

Title fixed :-)

Hopeful! Reminds me of going to cricket when I was a kid

I followed the word flow... Cautious Confident Fortunate and wondered if the next word was going to be Unlucky or perhaps Inspired..

Hope the best team won!

Replying to

Good point, Graham! I should admit that I only wrote this poem so I could finish with a pun on beginnings
