A Last Embrace

As night’s cruel darkness quickly descends And evening’s storm clouds gather apace, Your unfinished story suddenly ends.

As I hold you close in this lonely place I press your frail form tight to my old heart, Hoping that somehow it can beat for two And make your lifeforce not want to depart. But it beats just for me and not for you With your lifeblood slowly draining away Your time cut short by Heaven’s early call Taken too soon on this tortured day Your beauty defiled and wasting it all As youth now cut short leaves only a trace, I cling to your bones in one last embrace.
